Indian Wedding Lehenga Choli

How much do you know about the amazing silk embroidered wedding lehenga choli worn by brides from India and Pakistan? Traditionally, silk and chiffon lehengas came with a large variety of beautiful embroidered embellishment called Zardosi - using thread made of fine gold or silver (zari) - delicately woven into Indian, Pakistani and Persian garments. Today, of course, zari is not made of real gold and silver, but is a golden/silver metallic yarn interlaced with polyester. The results are just as amazing. Here are three garments normally associated with Indian bridal lehengas:
  • Lehenga.  The lehenga is a long, flared skirt which is heavily embroidered and pleated. It is worn by Indian brides and party-going women as the bottom portion of a lehenga choli. Unlike the sari, a lehenga is a pre-stitched skirt that doesn't have to be draped - perfect for the dance floor!
  • Choli.  The choli is a sensual, tightly fitting embroidered blouse usually with short sleeves and a low neck.  If you're thinking that Barbara Eden looked her beautiful blonde best wearing a pink chiffon choli in "I Dream of Jeannie" you would be right. Today the choli is becoming more adventurous than ever - with revealing styles such as backless, halter, tube top and spaghetti straps.
  • Dupatta.  The dupatta is a lovely, long scarf that is worn together with the lehenga and the choli.  It is often heavily embroidered and has a contrasting colored border.  Originally worn as a symbol of modesty, it can be draped over the head and shoulders in many breathtakingly beautiful ways.

Messages of Gratitude for your Wedding Program

Messages of gratitude - for mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, every person who shares your unique DNA. It just feels good to thank and be thanked. And it's good to remember that our loved ones are worth more than a vintage inspired wedding dress by Claire Pettibone ($26,000) or an overnight stay in the Four Seasons Resort on the island of Bora Bora ($1,780). A thankful heart is a happy heart. Put it in your wedding program - your gratefulness for with those who love you best.

A special thank you to our parents - for loving us, nurturing us and helping us grow into adults with happy hearts full of love and laughter. On this most important day of our lives, we honor our parents, brothers and sisters, and extended family and friends. Your joy, your enthusiasm and your presence fills our hearts with love as we promise each other a lifetime of harmony and humility. Because of all of you, this sacred day of sweet love has exceeded all of our expectations. In the presence of God we accept your good and beautiful blessings and commit ourselves to each other forever. In good times and bad, we promise to remember the day we spent with you - as we vowed to love, share and sacrifice. Your blessing is a great and wonderful gift.

We welcome our warm and wonderful families with humble hearts. Everything we are, we owe to your big hearts and open arms. Our extended family - eager to witness this sacred celebration of love. Our friends - people who were once strangers but decided they would rather be great listeners, coaches and caretakers. Bridal Shower Desserts - Easy Oreo Truffles

Bridal shower desserts - here is one so effortless, you simply can't resist.

Three simple ingredients - Oreo cookies, cream cheese and semi-sweet baking chocolate, lovingly shaped into (42 one inch) walnut-sized balls and dipped in light chocolate or dark.

If you want to cut down on the calories and fat content, use low fat cream cheese (nearly 90% of the calories from regular cream cheese comes from fat - the saturated kind - so steer clear whenever possible.)

You'll never notice the difference in taste, I promise you.

Refrigerate truffles up to one hour before dipping in semi-sweet, white or dark melted chocolate. Who wouldn't want to serve (or snack on) a decadent dessert as easy and elegant as these no-bake chocolate truffles.
  • 1 (16 ounce) package OREO Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 2 (8 ounce) packages BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Baking Chocolate, melted
1.  Put nine of the Oreos in a food processor, making fine crumbs, and set aside for later use.  Crush the remaining 36 cookies and place in medium bowl. Add cream cheese; mix until well blended. Roll cookie mixture into 42 walnut sized balls, about 1 inch in diameter.

2.  Dip balls in chocolate; place on wax paper-covered baking sheet. Sprinkle with reserved cookie crumbs.

3.  Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour. Store leftover chocolate truffles in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.

Engraved I Love You Stones

Engraved I Love You Stones - how thrilled would you be to receive a gift such as this? A smooth beach stone, carefully engraved with the romantic messages we are eager to see and hear. I love you more. I love you to the moon and back. You are loved. At about $16 each, these magnificent little mementos take from 8 to 10 days to create - larger orders (engraved wedding favors) can take up to two months. A small price to pay for the one whose love for you grows deeper by the day.

How are they made? Each 2 1/2 inch stone is carefully selected. A stencil is prepared and attached. Each letter is carved one by one. A sandblaster powered by air provides intricate details and precision. They are washed and prepared and ready for gift giving - wedding, engagement, anniversary, hostess or housewarming. An eco-friendly thank you gift from Mother Earth.

These engraved stones with their simple sentiments reflect the ancient art of stone carving, which was once reserved only for the rich. Now we can all enjoy the timeless messages they deliver. Stones have always been lasting symbols of strength, harmony, permanence, durability and immortality - all the things that last the test of time.

Personalized Carved Wedding Signs

How much is the right amount to spend on a wedding gift? According to The Knot, if it's the wedding of a co-worker or someone you socialize with only now and then, you should spend at least $75 to $100 on the wedding present. But in reality, most of us spend $79 or less. That's why this personalized carved wedding sign - priced at less than $65 - will fit comfortably in your budget and do double duty as a cherished family heirloom. Here's what you'll receive with this stylish, one of a kind personalized wedding gift:
  • Beautifully carved last and first names and wedding date.  If you would rather have your first names used as the background and a special phrase across the front, they would be happy to carve something amazing just for you!
  • Each carved last name sign is embellished with a two toned stain finish and given a coat of protective sealant to last forever.  Two saw tooth hangers on the back allow you to hang this amazing family work of art over a doorway or display on a shelf or family room bookcase.
  • Real wood can be just as quirky as you and me.  If you see a piece of wood with a perfect grain chances are it's not a piece of sturdy pine.  Pine has knots and grains that run throughout, giving it character and personality.  These signs are no different.  Expect to see the rustic beauty and blemishes and learn to love them all.

Bridal Shower Appetizers - Stuffed Mushrooms

Bridal shower appetizers - why not stuffed mushrooms - easy to prepare, easy to eat, healthy and nutritious. A few changes to this recipe will make it more low fat and calorie friendly. This calls for cream cheese (100 calories per one ounce serving). Low fat cream cheese is only 60 - plus more protein and calcium than the regular kind. Kraft makes a reduced fat parmesan cheese that has 20 calories for a two teaspoon serving. I never miss a chance to include sliced mushrooms to my diet, mostly by adding them to spaghetti sauce, salad, homemade soup and scrambled eggs. Mushrooms are fat-free, gluten-free, and cholesterol-free, every thoughtful reason to serve them at a house warming, bridal shower, or afternoon tea.

bridal shower appetizers - stuffed mushrooms

Stuffed Mushroom Recipe

12 whole fresh mushrooms
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Wipe mushrooms clean with a damp paper towel.  Break off stems and chop them extremely fine, discarding tough ends.

2.  Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and chopped mushroom stems to the skillet and fry until any moisture has evaporated. Set aside to cool.

3.
When garlic and mushroom mixture has cooled, stir in cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Mixture should be very thick. Using a little spoon, fill each mushroom cap with a generous amount of stuffing. Arrange the mushroom caps on prepared cookie sheet.

4.  Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the mushrooms are piping hot and liquid starts to form under caps.

Mason Jar Luminaries

I'm loving the warm, enchanting glow of these Mason jar luminaries that I originally found at The Country Barrel at Etsy. Unfortunately, the shop may have closed because the link I used no longer works. What a shame! Maybe you can use these lovely photos to recreate your own rustic wedding luminaries. Let me share with you why these are a must-have for any outdoor wedding ceremony:
  • Mason jars are cheap.  Standard sized Mason jars, are available in all craft stores and advertised on Amazon at around $10 for a set of twelve.
  • Mason jar lanterns can be used for birthdays, weddings and garden parties.  Imagine how beautiful these charming glass luminaries would look, lighting a warm and welcome way to an outdoor wedding reception.  Hang them from trees or along a wooden fence - remove the lids and group them together as rustic party or wedding centerpieces.
  • No messy clean-up with these Mason jar candles!  I've never seen dried beans used this way before but I'm absolutely hooked.  Do you know how cheap dried beans are?  Try a colorful variety including navy beans (shown here), pinto beans or kidney beans. Their down to earth country charm works well with the retro jars and they do double duty soaking up messy candle wax.

Christmas Gift Centerpieces

A stunning Christmas centerpiece you can make with just a little Mod Podge magic! These small, medium and large sized boxes were covered with festive red paper and tied with sheer organza ribbon. Candy apple red spray paint will transform ordinary candle holders into bright and cherry pedestals. This easy gift box centerpiece idea is from Plaid Enterprizes - you probably recognize the name from a large variety of creamy and colorful acrylic crafts paints known as FolkArt and Apple Barrel. And of course they also make Mod Podge, which is what transformed these ordinary gift boxes into what I call Christmas centerpiece works of art!

  • Purchase a small, medium and large gift box.  You'll also need scrapbook paper, 3 candle holders, spray paint, wire-edged ribbon, distress ink and hot glue.  (Michael's carries Tim Holtz Distress Ink and it comes in these amazing shades: Forest Moss, Tea Dye, Wild Honey, Worn Lipstick, Walnut Stain, Peeled Paint, Frayed Burlap, Fired Brick, Broken China, Antique Linen, and Victorian Velvet.)
  • Using Mod Podge Matte, adhere scrapbook papers to each box.
  • After you're done, seal the boxes with another coat of Mod Podge and allow to dry.
  • Paint the candleholders with red spray paint or another color of your choice.
  • Tie the boxes with wire-edged ribbon, making the bows big and beautiful.
  • Using your hot glue gun, secure the gift boxes to the candle holders.

Hens and Chicks - My Favorite Little Favors

Hens and chicks - those little green rosettes that make such charming and eco-friendly favors have a more formal name - Sempervivum, which literally means "live forever." And they will with some very well-drained soil and plenty of hot sun. And you can ditch the watering can for the most part because all these sweet little succulents want to do is soak in the summer sunshine and send out their tender shoots, making a larger extended family of beautiful baby hens and chicks in stunning shades of dark purple, sea green, silver blue and pale pink. Here is why these hardy little hens and chicks make my Irish heart sing:

succulent wedding favors
  • There are so many beautiful varieties of hens and chicks such as yellow, green, deep purple and red.  They are drought resistant and will thrive in just about every part of the United States - in growing zones 4 through 9.  Don't want to grow your own?  I pick them up regularly at Lowe's, Home Deport and local garden centers for about three dollars each.
  • A sweet little succulent can double as a place card holder and wedding favor all in one.
  • With all of us striving to leave a lighter carbon footprint on our beautiful and tender planet, it just makes good sense to take a pass on favors made of plastic.  Hens and chicks are so happy to be alive, they survive in soil where other plants can't grow.  With some simple instructions attached, these small succulents will grow and multiply under the care of well-loved family and friends.
  • Giving the gift of hens and chicks - especially ones you watch, water and wait on - helps others appreciate the care and love of homemade gifts compared to those bought in bulk.  Give them a small and lovely home in small glass jars, tiny tin buckets or terra cotta pots.

5 Easy Rustic Wedding Reception Ideas

Rustic wedding receptions - have the one you've always dreamed of - on the cheap! Let me show you 5 ways to make it happen with some inexpensive items you may already have in the house, the garage and even in your own back yard.

burlap table runner

1. A simple burlap table runner, especially on a white tablecloth is one of the easiest ways to transform your reception from formal to friendly. It looks even more rustic with frayed, uneven edges - no sewing needed! For your smaller wedding projects such as decorating candles, vases and Mason jars, burlap is also available in smaller widths, such as 2, 4, and six inches.

rustic beach wedding signs

2.  Pay someone to make you a rustic wedding sign Don't even think about it. I have wood just like this piled up in my garage right now and white acrylic paint in my craft box.  The more weathered the wood, the more compliments you'll get. I love the charming mix of printed and handwritten words - and quirky message - that makes this sign so unique.

ladder cupcake stand

3.  This is beautiful on so many levels - literally!  The rich grain of this wood is exquisite.  Would pink cupcakes look so delicious and welcoming on these brown wooden steps?  I don't think so.  The more natural wood - centerpieces, cake and cupcake stands, table numbers and signs you can squeeze into your wedding reception d├ęcor, the more your guests will feel right at home.

rustic succulent wedding centerpiece

4.  Succulents - charming green rosettes that warm up a room with their simple beauty.  Here shown - at right - nestled into a bed of faux moss and tucked into a small cup or vase like so many I've seen at thrift stores for less than I paid for my morning coffee.  A small but sweet centerpiece - even if you purchase the succulents ("hens and chicks") - instead of growing them yourself, you'll pay about three dollars for each.

s'mores wedding favors

5. It's amazing how much rustic character is in a simple piece of twine.  Who wouldn't love to get the perfect stack of graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows - especially in the fall - when thoughts turn to mouth watering S'mores made over an open fire?

Everyone will love the taste and convenience of these party meatballs filled with the flavors of finely chopped parsley, parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoned bread crumbs. 5 Breathtakingly Beautiful Wedding Vows

Beautiful wedding vows like these - would you believe they took all day to write? All describe how I felt (and still do) about the blue eyed Italian American man I married on that warm December day in San Pedro many years ago. When writing your own vows, consider using beautiful descriptive words like cherished, devoted, adored and blessed. Please feel free to use mine, combine or rearrange them to suit your needs.

wedding vows

What a beautiful day to be married to my best friend.  A friend that comforts and cares for me, and wants to spend a lifetime loving me.  All my dreams have come true today.  Here you stand before me with a warm heart and open hands, ready to commit to our everlasting love.  I am happy, I am humbled.  We stand here in the presence of our loving family and friends, anticipating the joy of our new life together.  From this day forward, may my constant love and devotion nourish and sustain you always.

I thank God for the day you walked into my life.  Because of you, my days and nights are filled with hope and happiness.  Take my hand, as we begin this journey together and take my heart, so that I may love you deeply and with abandon.  Your joys are my joys and your sorrows are mine too.  The days of being alone are gone.  Let us cherish this day, this golden moment, this sacred celebration with beloved family and friends.  I give you my heart.  Together we are one.

Today I offer myself to you as husband/wife.  With my whole heart, I embrace our future together - the joys as well as the sorrows - and stand beside you today and every day.  You are my friend.  You are my one true love.  I see hope and happiness in your eyes.  I thank God he brought you into my life, to love and to cherish, to comfort and encourage.  You are a greater gift than I ever dreamed of, and I promise to walk beside you, care for you, respect you and love you always.

From the day we met, I knew you were the one.  You understood what was cute and what was quirky and you loved me for it anyway.  I saw in your eyes that I was loved, loved in a way I had never been before.  By your many kindnesses I saw that you adored your family and mine.  By your tender devotion to your father and mother, I knew your love knew no bounds.  You are unselfish, loving, loyal, tender and trustworthy.  Your deep love is as solid as the earth beneath my feet.  Let us go forth, living and loving together - now and forever.

Today we are blessed.  Blessed to come from our loving families and under the eyes of God, pledge our love and devotion for each other.  Your love has been a gift that came unexpectedly and changed my life forever.  Always a great friend and listener, something deep in my heart said you were the one.  I promise to love you and protect you, accept and cherish your family as my own.  Let us walk together, side by side, and I promise to be faithful and true to you forevermore.

DIY Limoncello Wedding Favors

Ice cold limoncello - if you've never sipped this divine Italian after-dinner drink, make sure you do before week's end. Traditionally, this lovely lemon liqueur was made from the zest of Femminello St. Teresa lemons, prized for their exquisite flavor, abundant rind oil, low seed count and exceptionally high juice content. To get that variety we would have to make our way to the Sorrento Coast of Italy, where the hot Mediterranean sun casts it's warm glow over lemons and every living thing. But for now, we'll have to "make do" with lemons grown in Florida and Southern California. This homemade limoncello is made with pure vodka - so a sip is better than a swallow.

limoncello wedding favors

Easy Homemade Limoncello

10 lemons
1 liter of vodka
3 cups of white sugar
4 cups of water
  • Zest the lemons (the most time-consuming part - but the zest quickly adds up).  Place the zest into a large glass jar.  Add the vodka and cover loosely.  Leave at room temperature.
  • About one week later, combine sugar and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil - without stirring.  Boil the sugar and water for 15 minutes. Allow syrup to cool.
  • Stir vodka mixture into the cooled syrup.  Strain into small glass bottles, seal and let them age for about 2 weeks.

The stand alone signs are on the low end and the burlap "Happily Ever After Begins Today" banner is closer to fifty. Painted white (or ivory) and aged by hand, the "Dessert Bar - Love is Sweet" sign measures 14" x 7" - looks great on a table but can be customized for hanging as well. What about shipping fees? Just for reference, from Minneapolis, Minnesota to my home in Southeastern Virginia I would pay an additional $13.50. Current turnaround time is 2 to 3 weeks.
