Bohemian Style Wedding Cakes

Bohemian style wedding cakes - how they should look and more importantly...make you feel? Are they naked cakes (as many of these shown here), dressed in wildflowers, baby's breath, peach hypericum berries and silver dollar eucalyptus? Or adorned with fresh and fragrant herbs such as cilantro, sage, fennel, rosemary and thyme? That's what is so beautiful about these unconventional cakes with their lovely unfrosted layers. There are no rules. At least not today.

Sydney Wedding Reception Venue - the Dolton House

Joanne and Robert's lovely Greek wedding reception took place at the Dolton House at Jones Bay Wharf. One of Sydney, Australia's most award winning wedding reception venues, with a spectacular waterfront view of Sydney Harbour, it was the perfect venue for dancing and dining with a large group of beloved family and friends.

What’s your love story? How did you meet originally and get together?  Robert and I actually met at work. We both worked in the same office building and I would always see him when we were leaving. It took a little while for him to finally work up the courage to talk to me and it was just so frustrating waiting for him! I thought the constant looks I gave him were enough but it took him a month before we actually spoke to each other. We kept talking each night as we left work and eventually started dating.
Could you sum up your wedding in a couple of sentences – how would you describe the look and feel of the day, the vibe:  Our day honestly felt like a fairy tale (and not just because of my gorgeous Princess gown.) The weather, the church, the forest outside and having all of loved ones there just made the day so special! We wanted something elegant, classic and timeless and I think we achieved just that.

What was important to you about your wedding - what were your priorities from the very beginning?  The most important thing for us was to just enjoy each other’s company and relax! Weddings can be so stressful and a lot of the time you’re running around greeting guests instead of relaxing and creating memories with your partner. We wanted to make sure that we enjoyed the day together and took in absolutely ever little detail of the day!

What made your venue “the one”?  The church had been somewhat of a family tradition for Robert. His parents and siblings were all married there so it was just a given that we have our ceremony there too! However, I knew our reception was the one as soon as I stepped inside! The venue had that gorgeous elegant and luxurious feel which was perfect for us. We could add our own twist with the décor and there was plenty of space to house all of our guests.

What made the day really special and personal to you?  Honestly, just having all of my family under one roof made the day so special. We have such a huge family and it’s always difficult getting everyone together. My sisters all live in different places and I have a lot of family from overseas so spending this time together is something I’ll never forget.

What advice would you give to brides and grooms planning their day?  Give yourself plenty of time to plan and prepare – at the very least, over 12 months. There’s no point rushing when you don’t have to and although it’s an incredibly exciting time, a last minute schedule can just stress you out and ruin the fun of planning. We gave ourselves plenty of time to get the right venue at the right time and I hardly stressed about all of the other finer details.
How did the proposal happen?  Robert actually proposed to me when we were in Greece. We’d taken a holiday around Europe and when we were in Greece visiting family, he absolutely surprised me at our family dinner. I was the only one who didn’t know but apparently Robert and his relatives were planning it for months! I remember there was just a stunning sunset, we had both of our families around the table, drinks were flowing and the food was delicious. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal.

Sweetheart Table Chair Signs

We didn't have a sweetheart table - Phil and I - when my parents hosted our reception in the backyard of their tiny ranch in Southern California where I grew up. Dorothy across the street provided her prized potato salad and JoAnne next door, the sliced country ham. A card table served as our portable bar which was limited to whatever my brother picked up on the way back from the church. In spite of all the kind cards and compliments, I just wanted to change clothes, take off with my new husband on our three day Santa Barbara honeymoon. If we decide to repeat our vows and celebrate in the same sweet way? A cozy little table decorated with "better" and "together" (because that's what we still are) rustic wedding chair signs.

Beach Wedding Decorations on a Budget

Born on the west coast and living on the east, I've always been blessed to live by the sea. But even if I didn't live in the city that hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships each year, these inexpensive beach wedding decorations would make me feel right at home anywhere. Sugar starfish are featured in most of these beach themed decorations and you can find them locally or online (Save on Crafts offers a beautiful variety of sugar starfishes as well as sand, sea glass, driftwood, fish net and assorted seashells.)

Rustic Outdoor Wedding at the Sault

To fulfill their dream of a perfect rustic outdoor wedding, Lauren and Chris chose a spectacular view of fresh lavender fields surrounding the famous Sault Restaurant in Daylesford. The small town of Daylesford (population just over 2,500) is well known in Victoria for its quaint gardens, cozy bed and breakfast inns, galleries and natural spring mineral spas. The Sault sits on an 125 acre estate against the backdrop of the Wombat State Forest and takes its name from a French town famed for its lovely fragrant lavender.

How did the two of you meet?
Chris and I met at a NYE party back in 2000. We were celebrating out in the city with a group of mutual friends and had been making eye contact with each other all night. As the night progressed, and we all consumed a bit of liquid courage, Chris and I got talking and dancing together as if we’d known each other for years. When it hit 11:55pm Chris grabbed my hand and took me out on the balcony of the bar we were at to watch the fireworks. We shared our first kiss under the fireworks when the clock hit midnight, it was extraordinarily cliché but you know what they say; ‘the way you spend your NYE is the way you’ll spend the rest of your year’ and hopefully the rest of my life!

Why did you choose your wedding and reception venue?

For Chris and my one year anniversary, he took me away for a weekend in Daylesford. I had never been to the town before and instantly fell in love with how relaxing and quaint it was! We stayed in a beautiful boutique hotel and ate some of the most delicious meals we’ve ever tried in our life that weekend. The time we spent in Daylesford is some of the fondest memories that I have with Chris, which made choosing our wedding location a breeze! We visited a few different potential venues when we started planning our wedding, but as soon as we arrived at Sault I knew that it was perfect! We both wanted an outdoor rustic themed wedding, and Sault provided us with a flawless backdrop from Lavender and greenery.
What made you choose your wedding theme?
Chris and I are both very laid back people who love spending time outdoors! If given the choice we would always choose vintage and wood over modern and glitz. When we look at lifestyle, from our clothing to the interior in our apartment, we knew that a vintage/rustic theme would best reflect our personality as a couple. We wanted to have a wedding that we wouldn’t look back at photos of in 50 years and cringe at our decoration choices; therefore neutral, natural and vintage elements were all used to hopefully produce a timeless wedding.

How did you select your wedding dress?
Much like our wedding theme, I wanted something elegant and timeless! I have never been the biggest fan of giant princess dresses… They’re just not me… So from day one I was always trying on fitted or lightly flowing gowns. Suzanna Hardwood has always been an inspiration for me; the garments they produce are absolutely stunning! I had seen footage of a Suzanna Hardwood runway show, showcasing their newest wedding dress designs, and the coloured ribbon used on this gown immediately caught my eye. When I tried it on for the first time my mum bawled her eyes out, I guess that was the reaction I was aiming for (happy tears of course).

Tell us about your reception:
Our reception was full of laughter and tears, but it was absolutely perfect! The décor blew me away, our whole set up looked even more beautiful than I could have imagined! By the time our reception started the sun began to set yet the weather was still nice and warm. Our guests were constantly commenting on how stunning everything looked, how delicious all of the food was, and how happy we both looked. Our speeches had us both in stitches; I’ve never laughed and cried so hard at the same time in my life! My bridesmaids had to fix my makeup multiple times, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way!

What was the highlight of your day?
Apart from the obvious (marrying Chris), I think the fun that everyone had dancing and singing together after the speeches at our reception really topped off our night! This was probably the first time that we had all of the people who really mean the most to us, in the one venue, and everyone was just so happy. I really didn’t want the night to end even though I was absolutely exhausted! Thinking about all of our friends and family goofing around together; age differences between people, and whether they actually knew each other or not meant nothing to anyone, because we were all celebrating the same thing together. Thinking about our entire day still brings a smile to my face every time!
